Service area (also known as travel plaza, rest and service area, service station) are places along a road, usually a motorway or dual-carriageway, where a driver can stop to refuel their vehicle have a rest or take refreshments. They usually consist of, at minimum, a petrol station, parking facilities, a place to eat and some public toilets. Also commonly found at services are shops, showers and an ATM. These are often located in the USA on Turnpikes (including Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana), and all along the Tollway system of Japan (where exiting and reentering the toll system would incur additional tolls), and are Abbreviated SA.

For a rest area with no services, use highway=rest_area.

Notes

  • Make sure you add the area=yes tag in case you tag a way, because it is not considered the default for closed ways (bug #137)
  • highway=service — not to be mixed up with! Use highway=service for the roads within the service area.
  • In rural areas in Australia these are usually called roadhouses.
