Shooting is a competitive and leisure sport involving tests of proficiency (accuracy and speed) using various types of weapons such as firearms and airguns. This tag describes locations where this sport is practiced.

In Switzerland nearly all villages have their own shooting range; the militia army requires soldiers to practice once a year. Usually local clubs own these shooting ranges, therefore the sporting group was chosen and not the military group. The smaller shooting ranges normally contain smaller tracks and footways that are locked during shooting. The lock gates can be tagged with barrier=gate, but the whole area should be tagged as well.

How to map

Applies to nodes node and areas area.

Tagging scheme for sport=shooting
Tag Description Example
name=* Name of shop/shooting range/whatever
operator=* Operator
opening_hours=* Opening hours Mo-Sa 10:00-20:00
leisure=pitch An area designed for playing a particular sport – in this case shooting
shooting=clay_pigeon
shooting=indoor_range
type=*

Indicate the type of shooting.

Do not use type=*, which is meant to specify the type of relations (such as type=multipolygon).

range or clay_pigeon or paintball or indoor_range
boundary=hazard To show a potentially hazardous area
hazard=shooting_range To show an area with a risk of accidental gunfire

Tagging example

Proposed rendering

  • Nodes: a small pistol
  • A red area, should be an alarming color.

Do not use

shooting=range as this is implied from leisure=pitch with sport=shooting.
