WikiProject Nigeria
Welcome to the OpenStreetMap Nigeria Project
Goals
The aim and objective of this project is to plan, strategize and execute the mapping of Nigerian roads. These maps can in turn help to boost Nigeria's tourism potentials. According to this page, within Nigeria there are three classes of main road:
- Expressways - (using the prefix 'E') are what the Nigerian authorities consider the motorways in the country. From a European perspective, many of these roads lack the limited access nature which gives motorways their definition. When mapping expressways in Nigeria, pay attention to the details of the road (i.e. are junctions grade-seperated? Are there gaps in the central reservation between the carriageways? Etc). This should provide enough information to map the roads as either highway=motorway or highway=trunk.
- National roads - (using the prefix 'A') are what make up the bulk of the main network of roads in Nigeria. These roads should be represented as highway=trunk roads, or where replaced by parallel expressways, represented as highway=primary roads.
- Minor roads - (using the prefix 'F') little information is available on these at the present time, though from information it seems they are categorised by their zone, which determines their number. These roads should be mapped as highway=secondary or highway=tertiary where appropriate.
Any other roads should be mapped as either highway=unclassified or in urban areas highway=residential.
If anyone can shed further light on the Nigerian road classification system, it would be greatly appreciated.
| Nigerian Road Classification | |||
|---|---|---|---|
| Category | Prefix | Known routes | Notes |
| Expressway | E | E1 Lagos - Ibadan | Currently the only known 'E' route |
| National road | A | A1 Lagos - Niger border (via Ibadan, Ilorin, Sokoto) | |
| A2 Elele - Niger border (via Warri, Benin City, Kaduna, Kano) | |||
| A3 Port Harcourt - Cameroon border (via Enugu, Jos, Maiduguri) | |||
| A4 Calabar - Cameroon border (via Ikom, Numan, Maiduguri) | |||
| A5 Lagos - Ibadan (via Abeokuta) | |||
| Minor road | F | No known route numbers known at present | |
Please continue to expand this table with further routes, additional information, etc.
Bearing in mind that the project is geared towards tourism, it will be extremely important that the data submitted should include key landmarks, hotels, hospitals etc.

Local Streets
A method is needed to measure completeness of local streets. I suggest to check against Yahoo! Aearial Imagery e.g. in a raster of squares. Does anyone know how to setup such a raster? --Cambodia 14:42, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

Imports
Nearly all of the information from the GEOnet Names Server (GNS) has been imported for Nigeria. The majority of the nodes are place names, but since there is no population data for any of them, place type is defaulted to 'village' with a fixme tag instructing mappers to adjust as appropriate. The places duplicate existing nodes, but few places had been entered for Nigeria at the time of the import.
In addition to place names, the GNS import included other points such as peaks, bays, ruins, etc. The GNS coordinates are only precise to minutes (in DegMinSec format), so in areas with lots of points you'll notice that they may take on the shape of a grid.
River/Stream information has also been imported, although just as points, not as ways. They were imported to help with identifing any rivers traced from satellite imagery. The names tend to be placed near the mouth of a river, or where the river joins another. It's worth noting that if data outlining the waterways is available anywhere, it would be much better to import it than to spend time hand-tracing the rivers. And it probably is available, somewhere.
Mountains/Hills/Peaks do not have their elevations, even though the elevations are available in the GNS data. Whoops. =D Hopefully it will be straightforward to retrieve those nodes via their GNS:id and add the elevation data.
For questions or feedback about the import, contact user DanHomerick (email: danhomerick@gmail.com) or in the discussion for this page.
