Address SIG

Future home of the Address Special Interest Group, which may one day be a working group.

Why?

In my opinion, lack of address data is the largest barrier to adoption of OSM in countries where addresses exist. We need to improve the display of address data, and the ease of adding and fixing them.

Display

A tile server highlighting roads with address data and semi-hiding roads that don't. The idea is to make it completely obvious where data is missing and create an incentive to go out and fix it.

Best Practices

iOS Go Map!!

  • Add buildings beforehand, on desktop, add add:street to each address. This is much quicker and easier on a desktop, and means you just have to add the numbers as you survey.
  • Walk around with Go Map!!, and add house numbers in the tags -> Common Tags tab.

Tool Recommendations

Suggestions (incomplete and to be filled out) to make address creation and editing easier, in existing tools.

Go Map!!

  • Default address number field to numeric keypad
  • tap inside a building to select it, as well as the current method (tapping the way)
  • move building fields higher up the common tags (above the building levels stuff)
  • new nodes by default don’t have address fields - add these by default
  • Render buildings with a slightly different outline or color when zoomed out to indicate if they have addresses or not (house numbers show up when zoomed in and provide this differentiation but disappear when zoomed out)

iD

  • Show address numbers on buildings that have them

OSM Cartography

  • Different shade for buildings with housenumber/housename vs. buildings without so you can see them when zoomed out, and when the names/numbers collide on the screen so only one is shown but there may be more than one.
