Based on the Talk-ja discussion held in July 2021, I will convert the notation of Chome (丁目) and Jo (条) in Sapporo city, from Chinese characters (漢数字) to single-byte alphanumeric characters.

Location of interest

  • place nodes (quarter, neighbourhood and hamlet) in Sapporo city, Hokkaido, Japan

Feedback

  • talk-ja mailing list
  • OSM Japan Slack channel

Working method

  1. Use the Overpass Turbo query to extract the target nodes in Sapporo.
  2. Load the extracted data into the Level0 editor.
  3. Download the .osm data from the Level0 editor and save it locally. (The default file name is level0_export.osm)
  4. Use this script to convert the data from Chinese characters to alphanumeric characters.
  5. Upload the converted file to the Level0 editor and "replace data in editor".
  6. Upload the updated data from the Level0 editor to OSM. Comment the changeset as `札幌市_{name of ward}_丁目数字_convert`.

Note: OverPassTurbo can extract maximum 500 nodes in a single query. Therefore, repeat steps 1-6 around 2 or 3 times until there is no more unconverted data in the target wards. There are 10 wards in Sapporo, each of which has about 1000 target nodes.

OSM account for the process

This work will be carried out using the nyampire_import account.

Estimated schedule

This is expected to take place between 29th November 2021 and mid-December 2021.
