The Caribbean is a region in the Western Hemisphere situated between North and South America, enclosing the Caribbean Sea.

The Caribbean consists of island nations and dependencies forming an archipelago on the Caribbean Plate, the southern regions of Mexico, most countries in the southern part of Central America (excepting El Salvador not bordering the Caribbean Sea), the mainland territories of countries (or dependencies) on the north-eastern coast of the South American Continent (including Colombia, Venezuela, Aruba, Curaçao, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Surinam and French Guiana).

In some cases, the US state of Florida and the Bahamas are also included in this region even if they do not lie directly on the Caribbean plate and they do not border the Caribbean Sea, but they have as Caribbean cultural history (also the Bahamas and the islands bordering Florida are also frequently considered being the northern part of the Antillas, the southern part being the Lesser Antillas separated in the middle by the Greater Antillas, i.e. Porto Rico, Cuba and Hispaniola).

On the opposite the archipelago of Bermuda is not part of the Caribbean or the Antillas, they are not even bordering the Gulf of Mexico.
