Cartes.app is a free and open-source web mapping application that uses OpenStreetMap as one of its main sources of geographic data. It provides a modern alternative to proprietary online map services, with map browsing, search, places and businesses, route planning, public transport information and geotagged street-level imagery.

Features

  • Web application – works directly in a modern web browser without requiring installation from an app store.
  • Place and business search – search for places, businesses and points of interest and display detailed place information.
  • OpenStreetMap editing – selected information such as names, descriptions and opening hours can be edited directly from Cartes.app with an OpenStreetMap account; more detailed editing is handled through OpenStreetMap.
  • Route planning – provides routing for walking, cycling, public transport and cars, including multimodal journeys.
  • Public transport – provides a unified interface for public transport information, including bus, tram, metro and rail services. Transport data is integrated from public open-data sources such as transport.data.gouv.fr.
  • Real-time transport information – where data is available, Cartes can display real-time public transport information.
  • Panoramax integration – integrates street-level imagery from the open Panoramax project, providing an open alternative to proprietary street-view services.
  • Multiple map styles – provides different map styles and specialised basemaps for purposes such as transport, cycling, outdoor activities and rail travel.
  • 3D buildings – displays OpenStreetMap buildings mapped with 3D information.
  • Embedded maps – places can be embedded into external websites using an iframe.
  • Car travel information – provides route alternatives and information such as tolls and estimated travel costs and climate impact.

Usage

Cartes.app does not need to be installed. Open the website in a modern web browser:

Cartes.app

To use the map, search for a place or pan the map and zoom to the desired area. A place can be opened to view its available information, photos and other data.

For route planning, select a starting point and destination and choose the desired mode of transport. Depending on the location and available data, Cartes provides options for walking, cycling, public transport or car travel.

Users with a OpenStreetMap account can also improve selected information about places directly from Cartes.app. For more extensive changes, Cartes links users to OpenStreetMap's editing tools.

Help

For questions, bug reports and feature requests, users can use the project's issue tracker on Codeberg:
