The tag mechanical is used mainly on changesets. An obsolete (formally 'deprecated') usage is explained below. Besides, its use on objects themselves does not really make sense.

Usage of the key for changesets
When applied to changesets, this tag indicates that the change was made as part of an automated edit.
Obsolete usage
mechanical is a tag applied to boundary data in Colombia (see https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/mechanical#map ) in 2012 (see https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/mechanical#chronology )
It is unclear why it was added (see say https://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/11745109 ). Besides, its use on objects themselves does not really make sense.
