This was a guide on how to contribute to OpenStreetMap. In contrast to the beginners' guide it focused on editing OpenStreetMap only.

It was one out of numerous attempts to update or rewrite the beginners' guide.
Reason for being historic
It has never been updated since its initial creation. The guide uses Potlatch 2 which is no longer available.

Signing up

Before you can contribute to OpenStreetMap you must sign up to the Contributor Terms and agree to make all your contributions available for reuse under the OpenStreetMap licenseuses. The terms and conditions ensue that anyone can use your work in future without needing to ask for your permission each time. You do not need to use your real name as your user-name, many people use other names which are memorable but do not allow them to be identified. You will hoever be required to provide an email address to authenticate your account, but this will not be made public as per the Privacy Policy. You will receive occasional emails when other members of the community if they want to send you a message, often to ask for help or suggest some changes to an element that you have edited,

  • If you have not already registered you will need to sign up here
  • If you have registered already you should log in here.
  • If you have forgotten your password or username you can recover it here.
Fill in the text boxes and press submit.

Congratulations, you are now ready to add some content, but first you need to choose where you will practice on, and gain some familiarity with the editor - to see how to do this click on the 'familiarisation' tab at the top of the page.
