Rationale

In the winter of 2019, the Crowd4Access project received funding from the Insight Centre for Data Analytics for a Citizen Science project where citizens would be involved in defining and mapping the accessibility of footpaths for people with different mobilities. The elements of importance coming out of focus groups with users of crutches, long canes, wheelchair and owners of guide dogs were: presence of footpaths, presence of flushed curbs and tactile paving, and characteristics of street crossings (type of crossing and presence of audible/vibration cues and arrows).

Hashtag

We've asked our contributors to use the hashtag #crowd4access with their edits.

Timeframe

We're expecting activities to begin in September 2020 and continue into the summer of 2021.

Tools and Data Sources

We'll be using standard Mapillary imagery and local knowledge to verify the presence of footpaths and street crossings and their details.

Our core team consists of the following OSM users:

There will be more volunteers participating and we'll ask them to link to this page in their user profile.

Measuring our Success

We will measure the nodes and ways available in Galway, Dublin and Cork city before the event and after the mapathons have taken place.

Training/Instructions

We will introduce volunteers to iD editor in our workshops and online materials. The learning materials are still under construction.

Post-Event Clean Up

Our core team will frequently look at new changesets being uploaded with our hashtag, and apply corrections where necessary. Our mappers will also be asked to have their contribution validated when taking their first steps.

We'll post some results here after the first mapathons have been organised.
