Cycle Maps is an Android app for leisure riders. When a rider taps Find tracks, it lists the cycling and mountain-bike route relations (type=route with route=bicycle or route=mtb) around the centre of the map, with each route's length, its climb where it is known and its distance. It then follows the chosen route and shows what is left, and records rides, which can be kept on the phone and sent as GPX. A route and the map around it can be saved for use without signal. There is no account. The app does not give turn-by-turn directions and does not edit OpenStreetMap.

Use of OpenStreetMap data

  • Routes: the app's server keeps its own copy of OpenStreetMap's cycling and mountain-bike route relations, built from OpenStreetMap's data and made into lines in riding order (member order, shared end nodes, member relations in their place; side-path roles left out). Not listed: routes without a name, with state=proposed, longer than 150 km, or with gaps longer than a fifth of their length; a stage of a route of the same network is listed through its route. Read when present: ref, network, from/to, roundtrip, distance, ascent, description, operator, website, mtb:type.
  • Map: vector tiles from OpenFreeMap (OpenMapTiles); highway=cycleway and bicycle=designated ways are drawn in blue from zoom 12; contour lines by Maptoolkit.
  • Riders' rides that riders choose to share are not OSM data; the first and last 200 m are left off.
  • A route that looks wrong is fixed in OpenStreetMap. The app shows the fix once its copy is next rebuilt; each track page says the day of the data it shows and links the route's relation on OpenStreetMap.
