Information About the Project

What is the problem that you are working to address in your community?

(In this section please describe in detail the challenge that your project addresses. We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.)

FAECAL SLUDGE MAPPING

In Dar es Salaam, over 70% of households live in informal settlement areas. These spontaneous settlements make it difficult for the provision of social services and infrastructures for dwellers in the communities. The situation has led to low access to services such as faecal sludge disposal in various parts of Dar es Salaam and the rest of Tanzania.

The presence of inadequate liquid waste management systems in the informal settlement areas has resulted in the hazardous discharge of waste on-site. Usage of cesspit for liquid waste management is the most common practice in Tanzania but the high cost of liquid waste disposal services and inaccessibility to their settlements has pushed many households in informal settlement areas to discharge contaminated liquid waste into informal drainages and walkways. This disposal practise pollutes the environment and is a major cause of the outbreak of diseases such as cholera, malaria, dysentery, pneumonia and cardiac problems

It has been a common practice for local operators to use unhygienic methods to empty pit latrines in informal settlement areas where there is low or no accessibility to homes. One of the methods involves having an opening/hole adjacent to the pit that is opened during rainy seasons to release sludge into the streets with the intention that it will be carried off to the Indian ocean. The method is famously known by the locals as “Kutapisha”.

Cesspit emptiers are also used to empty liquid waste from septic tanks and pit latrines but only to those residents that are accessible by these vehicles.

These unhygienic practices for waste disposal pose a threat to the surrounding community and can be a primal cause for the outbreak of diseases cholera and dysentery to name a few.

What motivates you to work on this issue?

(what is the reason that triggered, inspired you to work on this issue, we recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.)

More than 50% of urban residents in Tanzania live in poor conditions in informal settlements, access to basic services is a challenge within these communities including liquid waste disposal. The Land policy of 1997 states that the existing informal settlements shall have their records recorded and maintained by the relevant land allocating authority. Improvement of the infrastructure in these areas is a key to a better life for the dwellers. The most affected communities are those residing in hazardous areas which makes it difficult to provision liquid waste disposal services. as Geottz, we want to dig in to support informal settlements to have these services despite being living in poor condition characterized with lack of basic community infrastructure services including sewerage system, water supply, access roads, drainage and solid waste management system.

As far as health is concerned, creating a comprehensive database of toilets within these affected communities will pave a way for interested stakeholders to take part in the development. The provision of better liquid waste management services will result in a clean and healthy environment with individuals ready to contribute to the nation’s development.

Have you worked on solving the same issue before?

No

If yes, what have you already done to solve this issue?

(Please be specific and highlight your greatest accomplishments, We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.) If none, write N/A

If yes, what challenges have you faced in your work to solve this issue, and how did you respond to these challenges?

(Please be specific and highlight your biggest challenges and how did you solve them,We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.) If none, write N/A

N/A

If no, what do you anticipate as challenges while working towards solving the issue?

(Please be specific and highlight the biggest challenge you might face when working on this project ,We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.)If none, write N/A

The challenge we expected to be on measurement of the dept and height of the pit latrines, but because we expect partnerships with GIZ and Service providers we will gain experience from them.

Another challenge is the perception from the community Because will be involving the mapping of public and private toilets. To solve this challenge we are going to do exercise with Wajumbe of the respective area.

Describe your sustainability plan

(In this section please describe how your activities will continue post-funding. If you are applying for funding to purchase equipment, explain who will store/use the equipment you purchase, and if you have long term sustainability plans for your community's development. We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.)

The project will involve mapping and analysis of liquid waste management practices in informal settlements and how do the community in place cope with those practices. Will explores how the community participate in managing liquid waste, the institutional framework in place, the legal framework governing the management of liquid waste and how the key actors in place co-ordinate in the management of liquid waste in informal settlements. Therefore all data that will be collected from this project will be sustained through a partnership with a Community Local community, public and private organization.

whereby all these organizations will be the beneficiaries of the data. Organizations include CESSPIT EMPTIER, Faecal sludge management company or Service providers, Public health-based organization, GIZ, Community, Local leaders, DAWASA whereas data will be used in their research programs like Underground water vulnerability, Municipality Council for preparation of bylaws and enforcement of the public health guidelines in the areas of interest, Environmental (NEMC)

Project Goal

What are your community defined project goals

(Please explain your project goals. This can include: setting goals such as "we will train X number of new community, "we will register as a legal entity", or "the data will be used by X", and why these goals are important to your community such as "we intend to engage X number of women in mapping activities so that we can empower local women” We recommend your response be a minimum of 150 words and a maximum of 300 words.)

To achieve the success of the project, then it must be consultative and participatory for all stakeholders. It has also been pointed out that the adoption of technology for managing liquid waste in other informal settlements is possible based on the affordability of the technology in place.

Traning of university students and graduate on how to work with the community and we will equip them with mobile data collection technology and Opendata source knowledge. Regarding the local community To ensure that the sense of responsibility other community members that will be involved in this project whereby 60 per cent or more will be female, Also during data collection, the project aims to increase the number of female participation in all categories such as Technical, Management, Mapping and fieldwork. Apart from the above goals also this project aims to have a long term partnership with Open map Development Tanzania(OMDTZ) for supporting us on capacity building on Open Data source, We are also going to build a partnership with GIZ one related with wash and sanitation service providers

What are your project long-term goals?

(Please describe your project vision. This can include: where you see your project in five years' time, how you want your data to be used, future partnerships you'd like to establish, or how you would like your project to grow (or not!). We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words)

Our vision is to see the coordination and integration of different stakeholders in managing liquid waste in informal settlements to improve the existing management practices. This will ensure effective management of liquid waste because the public-private partnership will be encouraged and allow sharing of resources.

Also, institutions in place for managing liquid waste need to budget and allocate adequate resources to be used to improve the existing management practices of liquid waste in informal settlements. Actors involved in managing liquid waste in informal settlements need to be committed to full-filling their roles and responsibilities to achieve a goal of creating a healthy living environment for the betterment of the community

We want to make a strong partnership with government ministries and other international organization Our data is and will be used for development planning and also serve as a critical resource when relief organizations are responding to disasters, public health emergencies

We would like to see our community grow through partnership, human capacity development and networking and Knowledge sharing with other organizations like OMDTZ, GIZ and DAWASA

List the tools you intend to use during your project and why

(Please describe which tools you plan to use to collect, update, clean, or store you data and why. We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.)

Open Data Kit (ODK)

Is a free and open-source set of tools that help organizations author, field, and manage mobile data collection solutions. it provides an easy way to record and submit information in the field. We will use ODK for field data collection during the project

Kobotolbox Server

we will upload our data to the Kobotoolbox server, this server will help to aggregate all individual forms into one container for further analysis

Open Map Kit,

Also Open-source mobile software for data collection, we will use this Android software for detailing building and other infrastructure, which further will be uploaded in Openstreet Map platform.

Quantum GIS

QGIS for cleaning data and map creation.

Web map

For all private data will be uploaded and displayed by using an interactive map which later will be embedded to the service providers or stakeholders' Platforms.

We opt to use these tools and apps because we are have used them in the projects and our team has been equipped with these technologies for a long, they are easier to use for training, data collection and effective when analyzing data collected.

What additional knowledge or skills do you need to improve the effectiveness of the project?

(if there is any addition training you will need example how to use open source tools ,how to write good report etc please identify them below and why, We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.) If none, write N/A

Due to scarcity of resources and Low knowledge on the creation of the Kobotoolbox server alone, we cannot be able to reach the final stage, then the OMDTZ partnership or Training Support has to be applied to ensure effectiveness.
