Important

OpenStreetMap has not yet decided if it will participate in GSoC 2027. Please hold off contributing to OpenStreetMap projects with the view of participating in GSoC until participation has been confirmed.

Interested in being a GSoC 2027 student for OSM? Then read the following carefully.

We used to recommend in previous years to get involved into projects as early as possible. Unfortunately, this has been misunderstood by many students this year as an invitation to involve AI into the projects instead of themselves. The result is a high level of low-quality contributions that puts an undue strain on our maintainers and volunteers.

We generally do not recommend to get involved with projects before OSM participation has been announced in February 2027 and thus a participation of OpenStreetMap has been confirmed.

If you do get involved, make sure to follow these rules:

  • Install and run the project and its development environment locally and read the project's documentation before starting to even look at open issues.
  • Do not spam issue trackers with meta comments like "I want to take this issue".
  • Make absolutely sure you read, understand and follow the projects contribution guidelines before opening a PR.
  • Projects that declare that they do not participate in GSoC are off-limits. Citing contributions to such projects in a GSoC application will get you disqualified.
  • Keep AI usage to a minimum unless otherwise stated in the project's contribution guidelines. Use AI to understand the code but write your own. Do not generate PR descriptions.

If we do participate in GSoC, then interacting responsibly with the open source projects will be an important criterion for being selected.
