Problem statement or statement of opportunity

The project stems from the major observation that Burundi does not have sufficient cartographic data. This is an opportunity to promote the OpenStreetMap project, in particular to contribute to the collection, dissemination and use of cartographic data, based on reliable and high quality information collected within the community.

Describe how the solution you are suggesting responds to the data gap / challenge outlined by the data user

NGOs, businesses and the government conduct dozens of large-scale surveys each year that require skilled labor for survey and census activities requiring data from the field. The activities of the OSM community will be of great importance in supporting these surveys.

Describe your project, list project aims and objectives and how you plan to achieve those aims and objectives.

The main objective of the project is to promote the OpenStreetMap project, in particular to contribute to the collection, dissemination and use of cartographic data, based on reliable and quality information collected within the community. This will be done through trainings session to the members who will be selected in differents associations, universities, and form groups by commune. there will be designed supervisors who have already participated in mapping sessions to ensure that the work is done correctly and the data collected is accurate.

Describe how you will increase the number of OSM contributors in your country

Describe your approach to including women and underrepresented groups in your mapping activities. [300 words max][300 words max].We will approach specifically Our groups will be mostly composed by women and young people as a majority. This will be done through motivating them and convincing that they also can participate in the mapping sessions and gain some experiences. They will be chosen in universities, local associations both in rural and cities areas.

Describe your approach to ethical data collection

Before launching the community actions, we will have to make known the intentions, spread about the Open Street Map thus it will be an opportunity to invite the local authorities to participate in our session and activities and ask them to support us as the outcome of the mapping will also benefit the country. We will be working hand with hand with the community leaders.

Describe how you will approach sharing knowledge

We shall keep on communicating with other OSM communities through meetings or on line conferences in order to share experiences.

Describe any risks that your project might come up against, and how you will mitigate against those risks.

Consider any local, regional, or national policies; logistical blockers that you foresee; knowledge or skills gaps etc [300 words max.]. The main risk is that members may not be very receptive to the project , but also the lack of enough means like terminals devices or network. this will be overcame through many trainings sessions and seekimg of potentials support.

This application is unique as it will be the first one to be conducted in Burundi and it is inclusive as in there will no discrimination; everyone will be given the opportunity to become a member of the community.

Project Plan

January 2022: Launch of activities
             Creation of clubs in each municipality
February: General initiation with the different clubs
