Problem statement or statement of opportunity

The statement must include:

  1. what the data gap, or opportunity is
  2. how the data you collect on your project will be used

We have an opportunity in Rwanda, having some datasets mapped in the framework of systematic land registration in some parts of the country in 2009 , we had as well various initiatives in all field of data collection which contributed in various domains but we have also a challenge to update all these data and collect the right attributes in order to respond to disasters and human settlement planning, landslides and mass wasting are frequently occurring in various parts of the country and there is a need to quantify with accurate information where they occur and be able to identify with precision those landslides prone areas.

Describe how the solution you are suggesting responds to the data gap / challenge outlined by the data user

Please provide a clear and well defined solution to the data gap / opportunity (Max 400 words)

We have planned the map-a-thons events monthly to mobilize the community and work hands in hands to make mapping activities on key datasets which could contribute in preventing disasters and contribute in proper land use planning as well as human settlement, this will be achieved through regular trainings and mobilization of new mappers .

Which impact areas does your project best fit?

Choose one of these options (Disaster(s) and Climate Resilience, Public Health, Gender Equality, Sustainable Cities and Communities, Migration & Displacement)

  1. Disasters and climate resilience

Describe your project, list project aims and objectives and how you plan to achieve those aims and objectives.

This must include:(1) 1-2 clear aims and/or objectives for your project(2) a practical approach to how you will achieve your aims and/or objectives (3) a practical approach to remote and field mapping that clearly states how data sets (both already existing and generated within the project) will be enriched during planned activities (4) a practical approach to ensuring quality data is uploaded to OSM (consider data collection cleaning, training, validation and any imported data) [300 words max].

the objectives of the project are

  1. To mobilize the new members to actively contribute in mapping initiatives we will achieve these objectives through a systematically organized monthly map -a -thons where we will combine trainings on site as well as online campaigns to create awareness of OSM Rwanda activities.
  2. To actively strengthen the OSM community in Rwanda by building the capacity for the existing members through map-a-thons , community outreach activities and regular assessment of the activities
  3. Strengthening youth mappers activities in the universities

Describe how you will increase the number of OSM contributors in your country

Describe your approach to including women and underrepresented groups in your mapping activities. [300 words max][300 words max].

We will organize and market our events online in order to attract new mappers on board , where possible we will refund the internet data in order to make our activities inclusive where no one is left behind especially women and contributors from communities in rural areas . We will also engage students from colleges and universities.

Describe your approach to ethical data collection

Describe your approach to working with the local communities and local authorities in the location you plan to map and / or an approach that integrates key community leaders, gets permissions etc. [300 words max]

We have had experience in working with local communities and local authorities especially in the Mpazi project in 2016 where the aim was to empower the communities to make contributions on mapping to prevent disasters in that disaster prone areas, we will emphasize on proper planning , communities outreach through proper channels of communication

Describe how you will approach sharing knowledge

Describe how you will approach sharing knowledge between the different stakeholders (specifically between OSM communities) and how this will benefit the project overall. [300 words max.]

the organized map-a-thons will be the best platforms to empower new members and exchange knowledge initiatives will be launched in order to upskill the members and contribute on the mapping activities with over all goal to contribute datasets which will be used in disaster prevention and climate resilience. the targeted visits to universities will be aiming to share the knowledge from OSM communities of different backgrounds.

Describe any risks that your project might come up against, and how you will mitigate against those risks.

Consider any local, regional, or national policies; logistical blockers that you foresee; knowledge or skills gaps etc [300 words max.].

the risk lies in the skills gaps from our communities where we don't have a critical number of experienced mappers and those who are on a better level are engaged in more other activities, for that we will outsource from the experienced OSM members from the whole East Africa

Stakeholders

In the table below, list the name of each of the stakeholders, explain in detail what their role will be, what activities they will be responsible for, and the budget they will be allocated

Tell us why your application is unique, and how the stakeholders involved in your application will compliment each other to achieve impact

We have a unique application as we intend to use this as platform to tackle at the same time the skills gaps and the contributions towards a safer disaster prone areas from the mapping activities which will be done .
