REACH Initiative Dadaab is an import of REACH Initiative's Dadaab camp mapping dataset. The import is currently (as of 2020-08-07) at the planning stage.

Goals

Refugee camp infrastructure to be included in OSM.

Schedule

Initial data processing and contacting OSM Kenya communities - August 2020 (done)

Discussions with OSM Kenya communities and the Import group - Septermber 2020

Conflation review (removing from the import features that already exist in OSM) - September 2020

Import Data

The data to be included is refugee camp infrastructure data visible on maps:

REACH Initiative is the author and copyright holder of this data. Humanitarian data published on public REACH maps are generally under an open licence. Further, a specific MoU between REACH's parent organisation and OSMF has been signed that specifically releases REACH data into OSM.

Import Type

This is a one-time import. JOSM will be used with this workflow.

Data Preparation

Tagging schema mapping will be created to best represent the infrastructure facilities.

Data Reduction & Simplification

Before upload, verification will be done to ensure the import does not duplicate existing features and facilities.

Tagging Plans

OSM wiki will be used to select the closest matching tags.

Workflow

Data collected in the field by REACH is tagged with OSM schema and each feature is checked if it already exists in OSM to avoid duplication. Dataset will be split into one changeset per camp.
