Brief Report
Agenda
- Overview of a map and the concept of spatial data.
- Introduction to the Geographic information system (GIS) and various map sources.
- Introduction to OpenStreetMap (OSM) and the community.
- Capturing data using Field papers and OSMTracker.
- Logging into OSM and uploading tracks to accounts.
- Mapping with iD editor and saving changes to OSM.
Field exercise
The session began with a theory lecture. This was followed by a field exercise where the stewards went out into the community and mapped the surrounding areas using field papers and the OSM Tracker. We then distributed print outs of satellite images of G.Baiyappanahalli amongst the stewards. The team emphasised that they would have editing control over the map and could mark important places from the community. The stewards found it easy to identify the boundaries from the satellite images and map the features of the local community using their local knowledge.
They were split into groups and mapped shops, street lights, temples, etc. that were located in the neighbourhood of G.Baiyappanahalli. This map is now used as a base map in the Spoorthi platform.
