Item talk:Q334
Looks like a robot creating a new category and/or namespace beginning with Q, attached to other similar things. I'm not sure of the point of this, though I'm watching. Build a world "of this?" Why? I'm lost in a world of echoes and pointers, or something like that. I'm not sure our wiki best accommodates this. Stevea (talk) 00:46, 24 January 2019 (UTC)
- Stevea, I am not sure I understood your comment. Could you elaborate, and link to the edits you find questionable? You might also find Data items useful. Thanks! --Yurik (talk) 02:19, 24 January 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for your quick reply. I guessed/thought there would be some sort of Sophox-like baseed back end, and I see this is fairly richly realized. Though, the first time our paths crossed, you were "breaking" wiki (though your new Relation code framework and a bot to rewrite text did the trick). So, as all of this stuff has very newly arrived and does take some time to get my head around, I'll ask you to tell me a bit about yourself and why you contribute to OSM. Just a few words here is OK with me. Thank you in advance; nice to meet you again. (I'm a computer scientist from the University of California and ex-employee of Apple and Adobe, so throw at me what you might). In the meantime I'll read up on the depth of this documentation (and thank you for documenting things as nicely as apparently you do). Largely, I didn't know where to look at what is a relatively brand-new framework (last two or three months) and it was two or three months ago we ran into each other. So, even for somebody who stands tall in this project, it's a lot at once. Allow me to digest. Similar WikiData stuff seems superfluous to me, yet I haven't really given it a test drive. Perhaps it is gummy mess, perhaps it is useful for at least one. If it is useful for at least one, looks like "we" (OSM) have something here. So, it's not that I find "certain edits" questionable, it's more like I find the injection of a new paradigm of "Data Items" (and an ontology and a lot of framework...) something my eyes are freshly opened up onto now. - I think the best location for such discussion would be user talk:yurik, rather than a random data item :). Please take a look at the data item page as a good starting guide. For history of the project, it was proposed a while ago by other wiki users, and I just happened to know how to implement it - hence we now have it, and it is used directly by iD (click the (i) icon next to any tag), with 40 people adding tens of thousands of descriptions. You might also be interested in reading the data item discussions. --Yurik (talk)
I can't help how we stumble into each other. Thanks. Stevea (talk) 02:47, 24 January 2019 (UTC)
Also, the earliest mention I can find of this goes back to May 2017, less than 20 months ago, a relative "toddler" (or "young one") amidst my decade in the project, or its lifespan from the early 2000s. So, again, while I'm curious, "sitting up straight and watching," perhaps you'll forgive me when I say "this is all still quite new," yet, that's absolutely true.
