Collecting Data

When you go mapping in Japan, you may take photos to collect route numbers/street names. The following photos are examples of signs.

Route Number

National Highway

  • en: National Highway/National Route
  • ja: 国道 (kokuō)

Prefectural Road

  • en: Prefectural Road/Prefectural Route
  • ja: 都道府県道 (todōfukendō)


Street Name

Utility Pole

You will often find a lot number (street address) at the bottom of utility pole advertisements. Sometimes a street name is also written there.

Pedestrian Bridge

Sometimes you can find street names on the side of pedestrian bridges.
