Your project

We are members of the Indian OSM community who are representing OSM India as Community Partners in the upcoming IndiaFOSS 2024, where we are planning to organize a stall, talks, and mapping workshops and competitions. IndiaFOSS is one of India's major free/open source software conferences.

Describe the local challenge your project is addressing

OpenStreetMap in India suffers from a lack of users, data contributors, as well as awareness among people. We aim to address through multiple angles.

Describe your project

Our activities at IndiaFOSS include -

  1. giving talks about OSM
  2. operating an OSM table, where we inform people about OSM (verbally, and through slides and flyers), answer questions, and sell merchandise (including T-shirts, caps, and badges)
  3. We inform people about OSM, what it can do, how to contribute to it, and how to join their local community; users about Organic Maps and OsmAnd; and developers about ways to use OSM in software.
  4. organizing workshops/mapping parties, where people learn to contribute to OSM
  5. organizing mapping competitions to encourage enthusiastic contributions

Since OSM is an open data project and powers a number of FOSS map applications, it has strong shared values with the FOSS community. A FOSS conference is an ideal space for increasing awareness and bringing in new users, data contributors, and developers.
