The HE_ref tag is used to link objects in OpenStreetMap with their associated entry in The National Heritage List for England. The list, which is maintained by Historic England, includes Listed Buildings and Scheduled Monuments, amongst other nationally significant heritage assets.

Talk-GB (July & August 2021) discussed this tag as it duplicates the tagging scheme for Key:heritage. It was agreed to prefer the use of ref:GB:nhle=* for the associated entry in The National Heritage List for England for heritage objects.

About Historic England

Historic England is a public body which manages the historic environment of England. It is responsible for administering and maintaining the register of England's nationally significant heritage assets. This is published as an online resource as The National Heritage List for England.

The table below shows which heritage assets are included in the list.

Heritage Asset OSM Tag
Listed Buildings
Scheduled Monuments
Protected Wreck Sites
Registered Parks and Gardens
Registered Battlefields
Applications for Certificates of Immunity (COIs)
Current Building Preservation Notices (BPNs)

listed_status=* has commonly been used to refer to the grade of the asset in the list - Grade II, Grade II*, Grade I (Grade I being the highest quality).

World Heritage Sites are also recorded on the List, but these sites are separately inscribed by UNESCO.
