Usage

Oslostandarden for Bike Accommodation[1] is official guidelines and requirements for bike infrastructure. We categorize bike infrastructure by type and width. The tags are not intended as replacements for other cycle tags, but as an addition for Oslo Municipality.

Values

Oslostandarden:cycleway:type
Key Value Element Description Category (according to Oslostandarden[1]) Example Image
Oslostandarden cycleway:type:cycle_lane
should not be used on nodesmay be used on waysshould not be used on areasshould not be used on relations (except multipolygon relations)
Bicycle infrastructure that is an inherent part of the road, but set aside for the exclusive use of bicycles, whilst being separated only by paint or other markings, and without a physical separation from vehicles. Can be red- or asphalt-colored. Width varies, see width C1
Oslostandarden cycleway:type:raised_cycle_lane
should not be used on nodesmay be used on waysshould not be used on areasshould not be used on relations (except multipolygon relations)
Cycle lane which is separated from both vehicles and pedestrians with curbs. Signposted as cycle track. C1
Oslostandarden cycleway:type:cycle_street
should not be used on nodesmay be used on waysshould not be used on areasshould not be used on relations (except multipolygon relations)
Street which favors cyclists and pedestrians. Motorised traffic are considered guests. Maximum speed 30 km/h and traffic volume under ÅDT 2000. C2
Oslostandarden cycleway:type:cycleway_with_sidewalk
should not be used on nodesmay be used on waysshould not be used on areasshould not be used on relations (except multipolygon relations)
Cycleway with inherent sidewalk which is separated from vehicles with curb or ditch. Sidewalk is separated from cycleway with sloping curbs. Opposite directions on cycle track are separated with paint as standard.

Dimensions: Cycleway: 2,5-5m. Sidewalk: 2,5-5m.

C3
Oslostandarden cycleway:type:cycle_express_way
should not be used on nodesmay be used on waysshould not be used on areasshould not be used on relations (except multipolygon relations)
Cycleway dimensioned for cycling above 30 km/h for longer distances. Dimensioned for continuous cycling with few obstacles. Separated physically from sidewalk. Illuminated. C3
Oslostandarden cycleway:type:pedestrian_and_cycleway
should not be used on nodesmay be used on waysshould not be used on areasshould not be used on relations (except multipolygon relations)
Combined pedestrian- and cycleway. Pedestrians and cyclists share the same track, physically separated from vehicles. Only used exception-wise when cycling takes place on pedestrian terms. May cause conflict between cyclists and pedestrians due to speed differences. A lot of these tracks were built until the 2010s, and still remain in use, especially in Oslo's suburbs. C3
Oslostandarden:cycleway:width
Key Value Element Description Example Image
Oslostandarden cycleway:width:broad
should not be used on nodesmay be used on waysshould not be used on areasshould not be used on relations (except multipolygon relations)
Bike lanes with a minimum width of 2.0m, recommended width is 2.2m. Standard width for lanes on roads with medium traffic level (ÅDT 4-8000) travelling at speeds up to 50 km/h.
Oslostandarden cycleway:width:normal
should not be used on nodesmay be used on waysshould not be used on areasshould not be used on relations (except multipolygon relations)
Bike lanes with a minimum width of 1.5m, recommended width is 1.8m. Standard width for lanes on roads with traffic travelling at speeds up to 30 km/h.
Oslostandarden cycleway:width:narrow
should not be used on nodesmay be used on waysshould not be used on areasshould not be used on relations (except multipolygon relations)
