addr:municipality is a key used to indicate the administrative division of local government to which an address belongs when the term "municipality" is used to refer to said division level (see municipality on Wikipedia).

This is a level somewhat comparable to what addr:province=*, addr:district=*, or addr:subdistrict=* express with the exact meaning depending on local circumstances.

Tagging

Add addr:municipality=name if it is common in the area to distinguish addresses based on the municipality in which it is located.

Similar tags are e.g.
addr:province=*
addr:district=*
addr:subdistrict=*
See addr=* for a complete overview of address tags.

History

The key came into notable use when the bot for import of Danish addresses, autoAWS, began using the tag for all Danish address nodes in May 2018 (deprecating several Denmark specific keys formerly used). Since then usage has been picked up in other parts of the world.
