This key is for the official name of a feature according to TEC, which is the main public transport operator in Wallonia, Belgium.
It stores the name of objects, most of them being tram or bus stops, with the exact spelling used by the operator. It must be set only when this name differs from the public name used in OSM as name=*. Apps that rely on OSM data can choose to display either the operator’s version of the name or the normal name from OSM.
There are several cases when the OSM name will not be identical to operator’s version:
- Several operators share the same stop but name it differently
- OSM naming conventions
- TEC uses all-caps names for the town prefixes
- We do not abbreviate names on OSM, but the operator sometimes uses a truncated or abbreviated version because of space requirements on some of their displays
- We follow the ground truth, whereas the operator sometimes use an outdated name or a different spelling
- Names are not descriptions: operators will occasionally concatenate the name with some descriptive information (temporary stop, platform number), which must go to other tags
- Naming conventions outside Wallonia
- TEC use its own naming convention for bilingual names, e.g., "RONSE/RENAIX Hoogstraat/Rue Haute" whereas the correct naming convention for OSM is "Ronse Hoogstraat - Renaix Rue Haute"
- Obvious typos in the official name
- TEC consistently ignores accented capital letters, e.g., Eglise instead of Église
- TEC uses 7-bit ASCII characters for town names, e.g., "Beloeil" instead of "Belœil".
Until 2025, name:TEC=* was used, but this tag has been phased out to eliminate conflict with the multilingual names tagging scheme.
