Status: de facto

railway:position:exact=* is used in addition to railway:position=* to provide the exact, non-rounded values of a position in kilometres.

On milestones, the exact positions is often times less visible (smaller) number than the rounded value so any readings thereof requires some closer investigation than the rounded number. It can prove to be difficult to read the value if obstructed by a barrier (e.g. a noise barrier) or in an inaccessible location from a public ROW.

Multiple values on a single object

In places where multiple lines meet, a single object can have many positions in relation to each line. To differentiate between these positions, use the railway:position:exact:<line ref=*> tag.

Example :

  • railway:position:exact:L12=3.4
  • railway:position:exact:L56=7.8

An object with only one position should be tagged with railway:position:exact=* without also adding the line reference.
