Legal/State Of The License/Enforcing Attributions

Status: Could do better.

Attributing OpenStreetMap is easy and there is really no excuse for not doing so, folks are getting the data for free and a lot of unpaid work went into creating it ... a small payment surely.

The License Working Group gets a steady trickle of reports and does not have the manpower to track each one thoroughly, indeed even respond in a timely fashion. We normal advise the person who reported it to make contact themselves and only step in if that does not work.

A small group of volunteers should take this on independently insider or outside the OpenStreetMap Foundation.

It takes courtesy, patience ... and a lot of persistence. Threats are generally counter-productive and so far we have not had to get even close to threatening legal actions.
