The State of New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) adopts the national Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Supplementary sign guidance is outlined in the NMDOT Design Manual (reference United States/New Mexico/Department of Transportation/Design Manual for additional info). NMDOT Sign Code Listing

The 2005 NMDOT Sign Code Listing is a supplement to the national signage standards defined in the MUTCD.

Sign Designations

The document defines the sign code, stock number, color, size, and additional legend info for each sign listed.


For example:

Stop sign, MUTCD code R1-1-30.
MUTCD R1-1-30

The sign code corresponds to the national MUTCD unless the sign code contains the abbreviation "-NM-". The stock # references NMDOT's Traffic Stores stock. Legend items written in lower case do not appear on the sign.

    • Y – Yellow
    • O – Orange
    • B – Black
    • BL – Blue
    • BR – Brown
    • R – Red
    • G – Green
    • S – Silver
    • FY – Fluorescent Yellow
    • FO-Fluorescent Orange
    • FYG- Fluorescent Yellow Green
    • FP- Fluorescent Pink
  • Roadway Definitions (As defined in the national MUTCD)
    • Freeway: A divided highway with full control of access.
    • Expressway: A divided highway with partial control of access.
    • Conventional Road: A street or highway other than a low-volume road, an expressway, or a freeway.
    • Low-Volume Road: A low speed road that serves recreational areas or resource development activities or that provides local access. This road may be paved or unpaved.

NMDOT Design Manual

The NMDOT provides additional design guidance for signage in its United States/New Mexico/Department of Transportation/Design Manual. Section 910, Signing and Pavement Markings, specifically addresses the placement and location of visual information required for vehicle operation, as well as the materials and standards for construction of such markings. The Design Manual also references the NMDOT Sign Code Listing.
