Proposal

I am proposing to add 'brand=..' to Dutch supermarkets, where-ever it is missing, if these shops clearly belong to a chain. This isn't a new idea. It builds on earlier actions taken in 2015. I consider it more a batch update on what happened then.

I will not change or remove anything. Just add the 'brand' tag where it is missing. And start to use level0 editor for that (I'm not versed in bots, or JOSM).

For now I'll focus on supermarkets. I propose a threshold of minimum 5 shops in a chain to qualify for this update.

Here is the current situation:

Rationale

There are at least 3 tags to recognize to which chain a supermarket belongs: name, brand and operator, plus sometimes a wikidata entry. A chain can use different names for different market segments (e.g. Albert Heijn uses at least 3: 'Albert Heijn', 'Albert Heijn XL' and 'AH To Go')

Tag operator can also include the name of the local franchise taker. Some chain stores are commonly misspelled, although this has been normalized in 2015 for many existing Dutch shop chains at the time.

I will take the following measurements to guarantee community support and minimize the risk of incorrect edits:

  • I will follow, of course, the Automated Edits code of conduct.
  • I have created the current page to document this automatic edit.
  • I'll continue to discuss this edit at the 'users: Netherlands' forum (link).

Technical implementation

  • I'll use Overpass Turbo to select which supermarkets qualify. And use level0 editor for manual updates in batches.
  • I'll do these edits with "comment=batch add tag 'brand=..' to Dutch supermarkets, if missing. See https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Mechanical_Edits/Infodisiac/Dutch_Supermarket_Brands".
  • This is expected to be a gradual update summer/autumn 2020. If the wish/need arises for extension to other kinds of shops, this will be discussed with the community again.
  • I will allow users to opt-out. If users want me not to touch some objects, they can contact me in the forum or by e-mail.
