About your Mapping Community

We the mappers is a community of 35 mappers based in Rwanda, we are basically graduates from different universities but focused on geospatial Technology, it is made up of former YouthMappers who were contributing on osm during at the university and now are members of OSM Rwanda. We do different geospatial asks and volunteer to osm, from last year we have seen the issue of luck of data in Rwanda and we decided to contribute to production of free open data that anyone can access especially private and government intuitions, we know that this project will be the solution for many Rwandans who are in geospatial technology and this will boost the use of OSM in Rwanda. we work as private community but in terms of osm we are volunteering we want many people in Rwanda to access data, free of charge and quality of data as much as we can, there is a need of this data in the universities and different institutions.

Tell us a little bit about your mapping community at the moment, some examples of details to include are below, but please provide us with any information you think is relevant. Please write 100-200 words

What do you need the grant money for?

We want to understand what you plan to buy, how much you plan to buy, and why this will help you to scale your community mapping efforts. There are two tables for you to fill in your response, and you may add more rows as needed. Some examples are in the table for your reference. You are welcome to use a different format in your response, but please make sure to include these details.

WeMappers and OSM Rwanda are committed to map health facilities and highways on OSM. From January 2020  started the project of adding the health facilities of Rwanda to OSM, our focus is to produce data that can be linked with village names that can help anyone to access the health services, and in this project we are interested in adding village names, health centers and connecting highways. We are expecting to see local population and government, ministry of health and ministry of local government in a need of those data as they are needed for problem solving. This is the project we stated just for helping Rwandans and basic services on the map, we have also decided to integrate the way of adding villages names because in Rwanda the government have changed local administrative boundaries and names, this has left Rwanda many places un named on the map, our roads and highways are not mapped and people can’t get the data, we want this data to be availed to anyone just to make osm usable and friendly in Rwanda

The use of money

  • Adding villages names to osm and existing health centers
  •  To host webinars on data collection and mapping.
  • To host online meetings with local Mappers and demonstrate hands-on workshops on data collection using kobo collector and OSM.
  • To held individual developing workshops on the adding surveyed accurate data to OSM using JOSM.
  •  To promote project information in social networks, local media, in specialized groups, etc.
  • To create a separate portal site to display the results of joint activities and the ability to connect interested organizations.

If you receive a grant, what do you aim to achieve?

It is recommended that this supports mission of the OSM Foundation and your local community. Please provide us with any information you think is relevant including the metrics you expect to achieve. Please write 100-200 words.

If I receive this funding I will increase the quantity of data expected to produce, we were targeting the highways connecting only the main towns around the health facilities but if we get this funding we will increase the level as they are needed by many people who are using OSM in Rwanda.  We will increase the training sessions from group members to other people interested in using OpenStreetMap, the university students especially Youth, we will make sure the data produced will be used for high quality which is beneficial to all osm users and hope that once those data will be validated they will be applauded to maps.me so that local population will be able to use this data

Do you receive funding from any other sources at the moment?

If you receive funding from other organisations currently, please state how much this is, whether the donations are regular or one off, and how these funds have been raised.
