OpenStreetMap is a volunteer-driven mapping project with a goal to create a map of the world. It was created in 2004 in England by Steve Coast, and by now has grown a lot, with the help from more than 600 thousand editors. OSM provides a free and open geographic data for the entire planet, which anyone can use. The openness allows for using the map data in many unique ways, from artistic posters to humanitarian aid. Among the notable OpenStreetMap users are Maps.me, Facebook, Washington Post, and Foursquare. OSM is supported and operated by a non-profit organization called OpenStreetMap Foundation, which is funded through donations and membership fees.
