The tag addr=main is a bit like a seal of approval to confirm that an object which contains addr:keys is suitable for routing purpose.

Proposal

Introducing a new tag addr=main in order to specify that an object with addr: prefix keys constitutes an address as an geolocated index, suitable for routing.

Rationale

Currently in OSM, addr: keys (addr:housenumber, addr:street, addr:postcode, addr:city...etc...) are both used to map addresses as unique features (relevant for routing) and specify POI's addresses as well (contact information, just as phone or website).

Issues:

  • It causes duplicates that can be misleading for data consumers who would want to get every addresses of a town for example.
  • Currently, many POI's contain addr: keys which can be misleading for routing because POI's location may not be relevant for that. Mapping POI's or addresses should be two different things.

Adding a tag which would be a kind of a seal of approval saying: this is an address, meaning an geolocalised index could help to distinguish for what purposes an object with addr: tags may be use.

Advantages:

  • Avoid duplicates of addresses data for routing: getting for each addr:housenumber one position, suitable and relevant for routing.
  • It does not affect traditonnal ways to map addresses, addresses with addr=main should be simply primary used for routing.

Disadvantages:

Tagging

addr=main should be added to any object with addr: keys which best represents the location linked to the matching address and suitable for routing (typically, the entrance of a building, a whole building, a driveway entrance, or more generally the interface between a public accessible way and some place...).

It may be added in a POI itself if its geometry best matches what the address should represent or an isolated geometry (node, way, relation) as well.

See also the proposal Le Schéma de Charlieu (in french). It proposes to use contact: prefix keys to add POI's addresses (as contact data like contact:phone or contact:websitealready do) instead of addr: keys which should be used only to map addresses as unique features. About 37000 objects are mapped in such a way, mostly in France (2023-03-01).
