Executive summary

This proposal aims to define tags for another tourism category tourism=homestay. Homestay facility is not fit for any existing type of tourism and it should be tagged as a different entity. Homestay may be very close to tourism=guest_house but there are some characteristic differences between a guest house and homestay.

Current use

tourism=homestay

Rationale

This proposal suggests tourism=homestay for the following reasons:

  • provides a way to tag all the homestays which aren't either a hotel, a hostel, guest house, or a motel.
  • it can be a good fit in with other tourism categories and it has a separate add-on value
  • it is a more common search criterion than tourism=hotel when people search accommodation in remote areas.

How to tag

tourism=homestay is used for a building that facilitates (only or mainly) homestay for one night or year-long stay.

The place must be a permanent building, that is it should be a tent, a camp, or anything similar; anything which moves, like caravans, should not be mapped in this category. Homestay basically offers basic amenities like a bedroom with attached or common bathroom; food facility includes Breakfast/Snacks/Lunch/Dinner and other beverages (optional).

Usefulness

It would be a great help for tourists/hikers/trekkers if default OpenStreetMap rendered this feature. Also, it can be used by 'on the fly' renderers like OpenStreetBrowser. Map Icon Suggestion:

Homestay are there in remote himalayas. Tag with 'homestay' will make it easier to get access through map search for tourist and helps locals in earnings.
