Proposal:Przskapitka

The prazskapitka.cz or Pražská pítka project emerged in year 2023 in Prague as effort to map coherently all drinking water fountains in Prague. Originally managed through Google my maps the dataset grew until the migration to OpenStreetMap database in the year 2026 (in process). During the process of transition and proper tagging into the OSM database using established OSM tagging schema, I found out that there are a lot of information that would be useful to include, therefore this proposal came along.

I am aware of the controversy about the use of the term "drinking water fountain", however, it has always been drinking water fountain for me (because english lacks any better word for czech "pítko"), so that is what i use for description in this proposal.

Problem Statement

During the transition I found out several not documented tags that I would like to include for additional information about drinking water fountains.

  • Since I performed terrain survey of the drinking water fountains in several subsequent years, I have historical data about operation of the drinking water fountains that is not noted in OSM in any way but can provide confidence information on how likely is the given drinking water fountain to work or not. For example a drinking water fountain was not functional in the last five years is not likely to be functional in the next season compared with a drinking fountain that was out of order only in one of the last 4 years.
  • There is no way to indicate how the water flow is activated which can be very diverse
  • There is no way to indicate whether the water is activated or flows continuously, this could be just a value for the activation=* key or could be separate water_flow=* key
  • There is no way to indicate what is the water pressure, this can highly influence the usability.
  • Next all outdoor drinking water fountains operate seasonally to avoid damage from freezing water but there is a problem with distinguishing this fact with the following.
  • Some outdoor drinking water fountains of the type "brčko" are only installed in the summer season and are deinstalled during the winter. This applies also to "brčko" which only serves as amenity=mist_spraying_cooler. This could be generally useful tagging for any features that are present only seasonaly and for features that are in use only seasonally.
  • Additionally the ref:prazskapitka=* would be established to keep better track of it.
