Proposal

Proposal is to create the tag: shop=groundskeeping

Store selling groundskeeping equipment

These shops sell equipment such as lawn mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, blowers, garden tractors, to businesses and homeowners and servicing them for customers. Please see the wiki page at: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag%3Ashop%3Dgroundskeeping

Rationale

Currently, these shops are tagged with a wide variety of tags such as lawn_mower(s), lawn_equipment, outdoor_power_equipment, garden_equipment, because mappers do not have the proper tag. When faced with that dilemma, mappers will often choose the next-best thing, which is often an incaaurate way to describe the feature. Renderers and app developers do not include them in their feature list because taken separately, they do not have enough shops tagged. Consequently, people do not find them in the search results. There is a need to cohesively define these shops. They are all similar to each other, yet distinct from other shops. They are not agrarian because they do not serve the farm industry, do not sell crop seeds, or large farm machinery. They are not garden centers because they do not sell plants. They are not country stores because they do not sell the variety of outdoor clothing, general hardware, and animal feed that those shops sell. A tag of groundskeeping_equipment would be too narrow, because these shops often sell fertilizer and seed, but only for turf, shrubery, and trees--not crops. A tag of groundskeeping_equipment_and_supplies, while accurate, would be just too long. I selected the term groundskeeping because there are wikipedia and a wikidata pages which describe exactly the activity that these shops serve.

Examples

There are thousands of these shops in cities and suburbs There are about 50 shops using this tag, example:

Rendering

Suggested rendering is with a simple lawn mower icon

Features/Pages affected

I think the affect on other pages will be that once there is a common way to tag these shops, more and more will be tagged this way and the ones that are tagged differently will switch to this tag. There are a lot of these shops and once they are tagged the same, apps will pick up the feature and people will be able to find them.
