Some thoughts about neighboring states' highway classification while reviewing the Minnesota trunk highway proposal (version 3)

Some general principles

  1. Let's agree how to map inside Minnesota for this phase of our project
  2. For Minnesota trunk highways that reach a border, we articulate a non-binding suggestion about what should happen across the border. (The suggestion is NOT part of the trunk decision/agreement -- make sure readers of our agreement understand that. We are NOT looking for consensus on any of the non-Minnesota suggestions.)
  3. For all other cases of possible trunk highways near Minnesota, we simply document the open issues without making any decisions. (Again, what we say about them is just a suggestion.)
  4. OUR next step regarding the neighboring states' trunk highways is TBD.
  5. The non-Minnesota cases should be documented in our wiki somehow. I am thinking that a variant of THIS page might be a good approach. I am writing some of this page with that in mind.
  6. In my review comments for the trunk proposal, I assume the above general principles

State specific ideas (including Canada)

Canada

TBD -- this will include a list of possible ports of entry that should be considered by Canada mappers. How should their side of the border be handled. This section to be fleshed out a bit more.

Thunder Bay & Grand Portage

International Falls

Other crossings?

North Dakota

TBD

South Dakota

  1. Consideration should be given to connecting Brookings, SD to the Minnesota trunk highway US 14.
  2. Consideration should be given to connecting Aberdeen, SD, Webster, SD and Milbank, SD to Minnesota destinations via US 12. Destinations then easily accessed are Morris, Benson, Montevideo, Willmar, St Cloud and Twin Cities

Iowa

  1. Consider whether trunk highway connectivity between Dubuque, IA and/or Decorah, IA to Rochester should be classified as trunk (US 52?). In Minnesota, US 52 will be classified as trunk from Rochester to the border.
  2. Consider whether Charles City, IA connectivity to I-90 via US 218 should be trunk. Also consider whether that should be expanded to connect to I-35 near Owatonna (allowing trunk/motorway connectivity to Twin Cities w/o going through Mason City, IA, Clear Lake, IA or Albert Lea.
  3. Consider whether Waterloo, IA and/or New Hampton, IA should have trunk connectivity to Rochester (US 63?)

Wisconsin

Western Wisconsin has a number of possible trunk highways when considering connectivity to Minnesota. Some ideas that should be considered follow

  1. Connecting Stillwater to Hudson, WI (WI 35?)
  2. Hastings and Prescott, WI to destinations in WI such as River Falls, WI (WI 35?) and Eau Claire, WI
  3. Red Wing to destinations in WI such as Ellsworth, WI and River Falls, WI
  4. Winona to destinations in WI such as Eau Claire, WI or Onalaska, WI (on the WI side of the river)
  5. Should WI 35 be a trunk highway?
  6. Is New Richmond, WI a destination that should be connected to other WI destinations with trunk highways?
  7. Should US 63 in WI be at least partially a trunk highway?
  8. Should WI 70 (and MN 70) be trunk connecting Spooner, WI to I-35?
  9. Give consideration to connecting to Taylor's Falls and St. Croix Falls, WI via US 8 and/or other WI highways. Taylor's Falls is a Minn gateway to Twin Cities.
  10. Give consideration to connecting La Crescent, La Crosse, WI and Onalaska, WI to Eau Claire, WI

Michigan

Michigan is a neighbor of Minnesota (Isle Royale & Grand Marais). No highway connection. Just a ferry. Maybe some day we will do ferry routes.
