Information About the Project

What is the problem that you are working to address in your community?

(In this section please describe in detail the challenge that your project addresses. We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.)

1.Improving the public health registry records at Bombo Hospital in Tanga City urban, Currently the hospital is using SPSS which is the great statistical tool for data visualization and analysis but in this project we are going further to map the lowest level of administrative boundaries system that does not exist in Tanzania to map hyperlocal boundaries in Tanga City Urban, by so doing plays a critical role in determining where and when to intervene, improving the quality of care.

2.Increasing accessibility of service and finding more cost-effective delivery modes.

What motivates you to work on this issue?

(what is the reason that triggered, inspired you to work on this issue, we recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.)

Finding people with exact addresses is nearly impossible, as the lowest administrative boundaries being subward/village. Therefore, mapping Tanga City Urban to such a detailed level will allow us to address health issues including sporadic diseases and epidemiological ones at a neighborhood level for the first time in Tanga City Urban. This is very important and will be used at different levels for decision making from individuals to the government.

Have you worked on solving the same issue before?

Yes

If yes, what have you already done to solve this issue?

(Please be specific and highlight your greatest accomplishments, We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.) If none, write N/A

We have developed the dashboards and health registry system for recording patients location records at Bagamoyo District Hospital in partnership with other organization during the outbreak of Cholera disease in Bagamoyo.

The technician/data clerk at the reception uses the system to enter the information of the patient including where he/she is from and other attributes, finally these data are being analyzed and results are displayed in a dashboard showing a summary in a daily, weekly and monthly the location of patients with cholera. Hence decision making

If yes, what challenges have you faced in your work to solve this issue, and how did you respond to these challenges?

(Please be specific and highlight your biggest challenges and how did you solve them,We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.) If none, write N/A

Technology gape - Most of the staff/ health workers are missing the crucial knowledge on geospatial technology, so we had to conduct the training on the basic knowledge on this technology for both of the teams to be in the same page along the execution of the project.

Inconsistency in data Accuracy and transparency - This is the great challenge where the patient gives the false information about the his/her location due to the fear that we might track him/her afterwards, but later on we realized this and we recommended that the data clerk/technician to educate on the advantage and usefulness of the data they are providing

If no, what do you anticipate as challenges while working towards solving the issue?

(Please be specific and highlight the biggest challenge you might face when working on this project ,We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.)If none, write N/A

Describe your sustainability plan

(In this section please describe how your activities will continue post-funding. If you are applying for funding to purchase equipment, explain who will store/use the equipment you purchase, and if you have long term sustainability plans for your community's development. We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.)

Mapping activities on the less mapped areas of the hospital catchment, as the policy of OSM Project is to create a free editable map of the world.

Furthermore to run maptimes and community engaging mapping activities around the project area.

Recruiting new members and formulation of new OSM Chapters in Tanga

Project Goal

What are your community defined project goals

(Please explain your project goals. This can include: setting goals such as "we will train X number of new community, "we will register as a legal entity", or "the data will be used by X", and why these goals are important to your community such as "we intend to engage X number of women in mapping activities so that we can empower local women” We recommend your response be a minimum of 150 words and a maximum of 300 words.)

Project execution shall include one team per ward with an expert or experienced mapper and not less than three assistants, moreover in every team we expect to have two local women.

Each team is going to be working with the local leader called mjumbe, with their smartphones/Android installed with latest version of ODK, where by they will be moving around local leader while tracing the polygons and feeding in information like the name of leader, shina number and the like.

It is our ambition that we keep working with HOT communities and from this partnership we can touch as many communities as we can.

We look forward to establishing new OSM chapters in Eckernforde University and other training Institutions in Tanga City also collaborating with OSM Societies and communities as Open Map Development Tanzania, and Stakeholders so that our data will be used and trusted

What are your project long-term goals?

(Please describe your project vision. This can include: where you see your project in five years' time, how you want your data to be used, future partnerships you'd like to establish, or how you would like your project to grow (or not!). We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words)

We want to create and build a foundation of strong community by using and developing tools for the community,

We strive to be the strong and reliable all over the aspects, we are developing environment to be able to disseminate all kind of data and education through workshops, mapathons, partnerships, events, you mention it, it is through this we meet new and different faces and new challenge that builds us to be strong and reliable in all over the aspects,

Serving the community with the open data and open tools found in the local community, so any community and organisation that has the same vision like ours then it 100% that we are going to look out for partnership with them.

List the tools you intend to use during your project and why

(Please describe which tools you plan to use to collect, update, clean, or store you data and why. We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.)

A team will need a smartphone/Android phone installed with a latest version of Open Data Kit (ODK) which allows tracing lines/polygons easily. Mjumbe, who is a shina leader, works with a team (mappers) to trace the boundary of his/her shina – also explaining the possible uses of shinas to enhance collaboration and participation.

A mapper with mjumbe will walk around the boundary creating a polygon-like structure then fill the right information on the survey such as number of shina, name of shina mjumbe and others.

After tracing the shina boundary, mjumbe and mapper use the printed aerial imagery as a field paper to compare what has been traced from the field with the image to make sure they have traced the correct boundary.

Then each team will send a form/survey to the Kobotoolbox server for further processes. Data will be downloaded from the server which will be cleaned, digitized through QGIS software, analysed and a hyperlocal boundary map produced.

ID Editor. This is a web-based OpenStreetMap editing tool that can be used to contribute to OpenStreetMap.

JOSM. Java OpenStreetMap Editor is a desktop tool that is used to edit and validate OpenStreetMap data. During the training workshops, all members will be trained in the use of ID Editor and JOSM to contribute to OpenStreetMap.

What additional knowledge or skills do you need to improve the effectiveness of the project?

(if there is any addition training you will need example how to use open source tools ,how to write good report etc please identify them below and why, We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.) If none, write N/A
