Bike-share stations on a map and walk, bike, walk journeys, offline | ||||||||||||||||||||
| ||||||||||||||||||||
Roue Libre is an Android app that shows bike-share stations on an OpenStreetMap-based map and computes door-to-door journeys combining walking and cycling (walk, bike, walk).
It is free and open-source software (GPLv3) built for people who use public bike-share systems. The base map, the cycling and walking routing graph and the address search are all generated from OpenStreetMap data (completed in France by the Base Adresse Nationale), and they run entirely on the device. Live bike and dock availability comes from each network's own public GBFS feed.
Unlike the official apps of bike-share operators, Roue Libre is not tied to a single network: it covers 362 networks in 39 countries, from Vélib' in Paris to Citi Bike in New York, and works with any network that publishes a GBFS feed. Unlike general navigation apps, it understands bike sharing: it picks the best pair of departure and arrival stations from live availability instead of simply the nearest ones. It uses no Google services, contains no trackers and requires no account.
Features
- Bike-share map: stations of 362 networks in 39 countries, with live counts of available bikes and free docks.
- Door-to-door journeys: walk to a station, ride, walk from a station to your destination.
- Smart station choice: departure and arrival stations are chosen from live availability, and the risk of a nearly empty station emptying before you reach it is taken into account.
- Mechanical or electric: where a network offers both, you can pick the bike type you prefer.
- Cycle-friendly routing: routes follow cycle ways, and the climb is counted and shown.
- Fully offline: vector map, routing and address search work without a connection. Only live availability needs the network.
- Several cities side by side: install the data of several cities and switch between them, or delete one without touching the others.
- Bikes outside stations (optional, off by default): bikes a network reports away from its stations, and the battery of electric bikes at stations, can be shown; a journey can start from one of those bikes.
- Light: about 8 MB of APK, no background service, Android 8.0 and later.
- Multilingual: interface available in 31 languages.

Usage
Installation
Roue Libre can be installed from:
Getting started
- Open the app. If you allow it, it proposes the city matching your position, otherwise choose one from the list.
- Download the city data (map, routing graph and address index). The size is shown before downloading, and downloads happen over Wi-Fi only unless you allow otherwise.
- Search for a destination or tap a place on the map.
- Roue Libre suggests the best journey: the walk to the departure station, the ride, and the walk to your destination.
- Tap a station to see how many bikes and free docks it currently has.
City data can also be produced by hand from OpenStreetMap extracts with the scripts in the repository (osmium-tool, tippecanoe, Python 3), then installed from a file.

- Improving OpenStreetMap helps Roue Libre directly: cycle ways, bicycle access tags and house numbers all improve the routes and the address search.

Privacy Policy
Roue Libre collects no personal data.
- No account, no telemetry, no tracker, no unique identifier, no Google services.
- No journey history is kept: searches, positions and destinations never leave the phone.
- Location is used only while the app is in the foreground, and only on the device.
- Network requests: city data is downloaded once from the releases of the project's RoueLibre-data repository on GitHub. After that, the only request is the bike-share network's own public GBFS feed, fetched directly from the operator's server with no Roue Libre server in between. The operator can therefore see your IP address and the time of the request.
