About

Sheffield is a major city and metropolitan borough in South Yorkshire, England. The city is famously built on seven hills and sits at the confluence of five rivers (the Don, Sheaf, Rivelin, Loxley, and Porter). Because of this, while the city centre and river valleys are relatively flat, the surrounding suburbs feature steep gradients; an important consideration for cycle routing and accessibility mapping.

To add to the terrain considerations, a third of the city lies within the boundaries of the Peak District National Park, meaning mappers in Sheffield deal with a wide mix of dense urban environments, post-industrial sites, extensive woodland, and rural moorland.

Community & Events

A community group has recently been set up for mappers in and around Sheffield. The goal is to coordinate local mapping efforts, discuss open data projects (like wheelchair routing and accessibility), and organize informal meetups and events.

(Chats are bridged together, messages in one will show up in the other. Contact User:CanopyFalls if you want the chat bridged to another platform or have any accessibility concerns/barriers to participation.)

No events are currently planned but a few individuals have expressed interest in creating a regular meetup for the community. Join the group chats above to get involved in organising or register your interest.

How To Get Involved in Mapping Sheffield!

Surveying

We are lacking a massive amount of survey data in Sheffield and need more volunteers to contribute to keeping the information in OSM up to date and survey stuff like addresses, kerbs and crossings. Surveying is one of the easiest ways to contribute to OSM without the challenges of having to learn to use an editor. If you want to get out and just survey your local area then apps like StreetComplete and Vespuci on Android or Every Door on iOS and Android are perfect for this.

Even adding a single address on a street using one of these apps can help mappers who edit from home fill in other addresses using the Council Tax Data.

Note: Further information on how to contribute using editors like iD for beginners to OSM, creating imagery using mapillary/KartaView and generally helping people find areas to direct their effort.
