Re-digitizable paper maps for offline data collection in the field | |
Sketch Map Tool is an open-source and free of charge tool developped by the non-profit Heidelberg Institute for Geoinformation Technology. Officially launched on 2023-02-22, it’s designed to support participatory sketch mapping through offline collection, digitization and georeferencing of local spatial knowledge.
The main application is for working with a community in a paper-based format before analysing the results digitally. It is a pen and paper solution based on OpenStreetMap.
Steps
After you finished mapping you just take a picture of the map and upload and the markings on the map will be automatically detected and geo-referenced. Described in four steps:
Using the tool can be divided into multiple steps as follow:
- Choosing an area of interest and checking the OpenStreetMap data quality.
- Printing the map(s) out on paper.
- Physically collect the data through pen markings on paper.
- Upload a picture of the marked map(s) on the website, the markings will be detected and processed into spatially correct data which can be exported in multiple formats (GeoTIFF, GeoJSON,…) for further analysis.
