The tenth State of the Map U.S. conference will take place in Tucson, Arizona at the University of Arizona from November 5th to 8th, 2020.

April 21, 2020 update regarding COVID-19

The State of the Map US Organizing Committee is committed to holding a live conference, but the safety and health of our community are the highest priority. Should our conference be impacted, we will look to postpone the event until early 2021 and do not intend to cancel or move to a virtual format. We will be working with our hosts, the University of Arizona, to provide updates over the coming months. Should you be chosen as a scholar or to present, we will be in touch to make sure you are still available should the conference dates change.

1pm to 5pm - Hackathon, mapathon and OpenStreetMap Open House at Catalyst - free!

5-7pm - Welcome social and early registration- free!

Friday November 6, 2020

9am-5pm - State of the Map US Conference at University of Arizona Student Union - tickets required.

Evening social event - tickets required.

Saturday November 7, 2020

9am-5pm - SOTMUS Conference at UA Student Union - tickets required.

Evening social event - tickets required.

Sunday November 8, 2020

9am to 12pm - Convene at Catalyst maker space to work on a project, get some mapping in, or mingle with fellow mappers at the open house - free!

Call for Proposals

You’re invited to propose a session for the annual State of the Map US 2020 conference being held in Tucson, Arizona November 5 to 8. State of the Map US is the biggest and best gathering of OpenStreetMap community members from across the country, and we would love for you to participate!

Session Formats & Topics

The program will include space for keynote speakers, panels, 20 minute talks, 5 minute lightning talks, 1+ hour workshops, birds of a feather topics, and there’s even room for improvisational sessions and outdoor activities. Our goal is to not only feature speakers but also include more time for organic participation from all attendees. We also hope to feature a few virtual sessions from speakers who cannot travel to the US and a series of sessions in Spanish. Please indicate in the application if you’d be interested in presenting virtually. Don’t worry if your idea doesn’t fit neatly in these categories. Please submit it anyway and surprise us!

  • July 1, 2020: Deadline for submissions to be considered for early decision
  • July 14, 2020 Final submission deadline
  • August 1, 2020: Speakers notified of early decision

Logo Contest

This year, the State of the Map US Organizing Committee is delighted to announce that we will be holding a logo competition. We want the community to take part in building a meaningful and memorable logo for State of the Map US 2020 in Tucson

Who Should Enter?

You! We welcome submissions from everyone - first time doodlers, Inkscape wizards, or seasoned designers - we’d love to see your idea. Entrants may be an individual or team of people, even a design company.

DEADLINE: The deadline has been extended 5 days! Entries must now be submitted [via email](sotmus+logo@openstreetmap.us) by 11:59PM PST on Friday, March 27, 2020.

Winners will receive one free conference registration (value $200), $300 in travel reimbursement, and a limited edition 10th Anniversary t-shirt

How to Enter

  • Create your logo in PNG file format and a scalable file format (either SVG or PDF).
  • If you're not used to scalable formats please still enter the competition as we can try to help.
  • Send your logo as an attachment, in a ZIP file, or included in a link to [[1]]

Logo Design Rules

The design MUST

  • Include themes for Tucson or Arizona
  • Be easily printable on t-shirts with as few colors as possible (no more than 5). This keeps the cost of printing down.
  • Work well on different colored backgrounds (or have alternatives for light and dark backgrounds). Be delivered in PNG file format and a scalable format (SVG or PDF).
  • Not be similar to other mapping conference logos (ESRI, SOTM,FOSS4G...)
  • Not communicate the brand of potential sponsors or related companies
  • Not include copyrighted material that is not yours

The design MAY

  • Come in different sizes (example: a main logo and a variant for use on small print media such as badges).

The design should communicate

  • Local culture: Indigenous, Hispanic, southwest US
  • OpenStreetMap theme
  • Geospatial / mapping concepts
  • a sense of learning and education
  • A sense of community

The design should not communicate

  • Corporate / big business (as the sole element)
  • Complexity
  • Expensive
  • For geeks only
  • Closed community

Conditions

  • By submitting a logo you will be assigning your copyright to OSM US so that it can be used across different mediums. The organizing committee may also commission improvements of the winning work as needed.
  • Entries must be submitted via email to [[2]] by 11:59PM West Coast time on Friday, 27 March 2020.

Distribution

Logo may be included in:

  • The conference website, flyers, emails, sponsor communications, t-shirts and potentially other conference swag.
  • Printed material at the conference such as program of talks, notebooks, banners and conference guide.
  • Potentially small web-based button images for use on third party websites to promote the conference or fact that someone is speaking there, for placement on blogs and other web pages.
