surface=asphalt with asphalt:type=porous indicates the object is paved with porous asphalt concrete (Dutch: zeer open asfaltbeton).

Porous asphalt is permeable, resulting in better drainage of rainwater. The openings in the asphalt also absorb noise from traffic. The opposite of porous asphalt is dense asphalt.

For two-layer porous asphalt, please use the more specific tag asphalt:type=porous:double instead.

A hybrid surface can be created by first constructing porous asphalt and then filling the pores with cement concrete. Such hybrid surfaces are tagged as surface=concrete with concrete:type=filled_porous_asphalt.
