A firebreak is a linear obstacle used to limit the spread of forest fires by breaking up the surface combustible layer consisting of grass, leaves, deadwood, shrubs, and the like. A firebreak is not created as a barrier to pedestrians or vehicles, but it can hinder their movement. In some cases, furrows and the soil piles along them are used for pedestrian or vehicle movement. If footprints or tire tracks are present along the firebreak, road attributes can be added to the furrow, such as highway=path or highway=track.

However, in satellite images, it is not always possible to reliably distinguish between a furrow and a forest road, as these objects are similar. For accurate identification, it is recommended to pay attention to the configuration of the linear object, determining whether it fences off fire-hazardous areas, connects something, or leads somewhere. To avoid errors, it is also advisable to verify the object type on the ground. A furrow should not be confused with a ditch dug as an obstacle for people or vehicles, since functionally and technically, these are different types of objects.
