A fallout shelter protects occupants from radioactive fallout in the event of a nuclear war. In the US, fallout shelters were constructed as a civil-defense effort. The purpose of a fallout shelter is to shield the occupants from exposure to radiation emitted by fallout until it has decayed significantly to a lower risk level. It is not to be confused with a nuclear bunker, which is intended to also survive a nuclear explosion.
