Workplace or office of an artisan for tatami mat.

Tatami is a mat made from rice straw, chipboard, and/or extruded polystyrene foam covered with a weave of soft rush, and usually made in a rectangular shape, twice as long as wide. Single tatami may be used as a mat, but it is quite common to be lined up as a flooring material in traditional Japanese rooms, and some adjustments are required to cover a room floor completely.

The trade of an artisan for tatami mat includes making, adjusting, repairing, and refreshing tatami mats. Their trade skills may be certified (in 2 grades) by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, and recent statistics show 60-80 artisans are certified per year.

It is estimated that there are 6,000 shops in Japan.[1]
