This tag is commonly used to tagged implicit 50 km/h speed limit in urban areas across Canada. Most provinces and territories set a default speed limit of 50 km/h on urban areas, with some exceptions:
- Alberta: The province's Traffic Safety Act defines two urban speed limits, 50 km/h on ordinary roads and 80 km/h on provincial highways
- Nova Scotia: The province's Motor Vehicle Act defines implicit urban speed limits based on predominant land use along road (i.e. residential, business, urban park), all at 50 km/h, . Similar provisions exists on the traffic laws of certain U.S. states.
- Saskatchewan: The province's Traffic Safety Act does not define separate urban and rural speed limits, instead defining a provincewide 80 km/h speed limit unless otherwise posted.
- Yukon: The territory's Motor Vehicles Act does not define separate urban and rural speed limits, instead defining a territory-wide 50 km/h speed limit unless otherwise posted.
Due to traffic law in Canada being under provincial or territorial jurisdiction, the usage of this tag is controversial. Province- or territory-specific values have been used in place of this, but so far, most are in Alberta and British Columbia. Most instances of this tage are added via StreetComplete.
