A dedicated detention facility run by the police in a separate building or wing. People here are typically kept in custody until their trial or for smaller misdemeanors for which they will be released after a short amount of times (e.g. a few days). This is commonly known as jail.

An amenity=prison is a facility where people are kept for longer periods of time and where they also live.

police=detention is for a building of facility which only has detention facilities (i.e. a jail). For a police office which also has some cells but has also other police functions, use amenity=police + detention=yes

How to map

Draw the outline of the building or place a node on the building or the part of the building that is used as a detention facility by the police. Holding cells that are part of police stations shall not be tagged individually, as long as they are not in an isolated part of the building or in a different building.

Not to be confused with prisons run be the judiciary or the military.
