The tag protected_area=recreation is used to tag parks which are natural, rather than manicured in character, and are predominantly used for public recreation. Such parks may contain significant public amenities while still maintaining a largely wild and/or natural landscape. These lands typically also serve a conservation purpose, however, the primary usage is recreation. State Parks in the United States may often fall into this category. These areas should also be coupled with protect_class=6 indicating a "sustainable use of natural resources" unless another values of protect_class=* has been assgined by an authoritative source.

Consider the following tagging for these areas:

boundary=protected_area Indicates that the area is a protected area
protected_area=recreation Indicates that the area is predominantely used for recreation
protect_class=6 Indicates that the area is a "sustainable use of natural resources" (unless a different value of protect_class=* aplies
name=* The area's name
protection_title=* The title of the area, for example, State Park.
operator=* The government agency or private entity that operates the amenities in the park
