The tag shop=yes indicates an unspecified type of shop.

It is recommended when possible to avoid this tag in favor of a more specific shop=* value.

See a list of popular values on shop=*, and see the list of all currently used values on taginfo. If you still haven't found a match, create your own value.

As property

It is also used as a property, most commonly on amenity=fuel to indicate that object has an associated shop.

It is preferable to simply map nearby shop as a separate object, as positions are inherently recorded in OSM there is no real need to record that info in nearby amenity=fuel object.

Rendering

Since version 4.22 of the Carto map style, places with shop=yes are not rendered anymore.
