Why XBT?

Why do we tag Bitcoin with XBT tag when btc ticker and also abbreviation is BTC? I found that it is due to ISO norm that specifies that for currencies not bound to a country, it should begin with X, but it is not mentioned on the wiki. In my opinion it makes no sense to use this while BTC is generally recognized, unlike the XBT. Additionally, other cryptocurrencies mentioned on the page like BCH, LTC, on this wiki does not begin with X, so the documentation and tagging is inconsistent anyway, if the ISO norm is a true reason. Could someone explain this to me? Otherwise I would probably propose a change to BTC. Ondřej Lopatka (talk) 18:59, 6 June 2026 (UTC)

The simple answer is: that's how I found the situation and there were already a lot of places tagged. I have no preference at all for BTC vs XBT. It just was that that was the practice and that was documented as such.

So it is possible still to change it to BTC? I assume it would be more friendly for novel editors. Also retagging all current “XBT” to “BTC” should not be a problem.
