Contraction, not abbreviation

Abbreviation is when trailing letters are omitted, e.g. "e.g.". Contraction is when middle letters are omitted, e.g. "St." for Saint.

US-style always has a period suffix, UK style an optional dot suffix (often based on the final contraction letter differing from the last full-form one).
